Walk like MADD 2011...Success!!!

Today June 11th 2011 we Walked like M.A.D.D at Suny Farmingdale. HUNDREDS of people (and dogs!) still showed up even in the rain and with the threat of thunderstorms in high spirits and ready to walk in their loved ones memory! This year was especially special ( and sad) for my group, " Stephens crew" as this July is the 10 year anniversary of his death. Myself and my best friend Jerilyn devised a plan last year to purchase a bench in the garden of awareness in memory of our friend. With the love and support of 22 people we were about to raise the money and the bench went in last week!

The garden of awareness in located on the SUNY Farmingdale campus. There is a beautful garden area with benches, each one dedicated to a different person who was killed by a drunk driver. There is also a wall that is FILLED with names of people who were killed or injured by drunk drivers. It is a beautiful tribute and wonderful thing for us, the families and friends of these people to have to pay tribute and to just sit and remember our loved ones who have gone too soon.

I wrote this last year after the walk ( by the way it is in its 5th year now!) and it still expresses how I felt today so I would like to share it with you all:

On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes.

About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives.

A first time drunk driving offender on average has driven drunk 87 times prior to being arrested.

These are only 3 of the reasons we walk every year to support MADD!

It seemed like this year’s Walk Like MADD even drew a lot more people than the last 3. Seeing this many people at the event made me feel happy, but at the same time brought a huge sadness to my heart. All of those people were there to support a wonderful organization and at the same time walking in remembrance of a loved one they lost.

My group "Stephens Crew" walked in memory of Stephen Bosco. In 2001 Stephen was killed by a drunk driver on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown, he was only 20. Steve was the kind of guy that you couldn't help but smile around, he always wanted everyone to laugh and be happy. On July 10 ,2001 he was taken away from us because someone made the stupid decision to get behind the wheel of his car after a night of drinking. Getting that phone call the next day from my friend Dawn telling me about what happened is something I never want to endure ever again, and hope no one else ever has to.

Also, when I was 12 my mother was a victim of a drunk driver, the driver being her friend who she was in the car with. I am still not completely clear on the details (I haven't asked much and I was young at the time) but they left a bar one night after a dart tournament and I guess her "friend" didn't seem drunk so they left together. On their way home the driver ended up driving underneath a landscaping truck. Yes UNDERNEATH the back end of the truck that was parked. My mother was thrown into the windshield of the car. i just found out recently that when they got there nobody could even imagine she was alive as they looked at her half in the car and half in the windshield, but one first resonder finally checked her and saw she had a VERY SLIGHT pulse.  Doctors didn't think she would make it past the first 12 hours. Somehow she did and lucky for us we were able to have a mom. Though she has never been the same person as before the accident, she has physical scars to this day. She has an eye that doesn’t work and it stays shut (couldn’t be saved) as well as hardly any memory of her life before the accident. Here and there she will bring up things and ask us about them...even 17 years later and we will tell her about it or piece the story together. It is amazing that she survived this.

In both of these situations...the drunk drivers walked away pretty much UNHARMED!

Drunk driving is a preventable problem. I still do not understand why people cannot get it through their heads that this is NOT a good idea! Now I am no angel, I drink on occasion and have been known to have a few too many. Not being a driver I have never been in that situation. I have always felt that if I WERE to ever be in that position, that I would know better and so should everyone else! Everyone likes to have a good time with or without alcohol. Don't take this as an attack on drinking I like to drink here and there too, this is pointed at people who think "this won't happen to me". Guess what?? One day it will! If it is getting pulled over, injuring someone or even killing someone....it will happen. There is no shame in calling a cab, friend or family member when you have had too much to drink. The shame would be getting behind the wheel and endangering everyone around you, and the shame would be on YOUR family because of your actions!

MADD is an amazing organization and I will be doing my part to help them, probably for the rest of my life. Raising money to educate people, young and old about the dangers of drinking and driving. The thing that always gets me is that this is PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE!! We are all told from a young age about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, but there are still people in this world who are reckless and think they can do what they want with no consequences!

Hopefully MADD will be able to do wonderful things with the money that we raised this year and I will be there again next year with my heart, wallet, and time open to help them out

Please everyone for the sake of yourself, your family and everyone else out on the roads. PLEASE DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, and if you are going out for a night of partying....leave your keys at home and designate a driver!

My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by the actions of drunk drivers, and I hope you all find the strength to move on and keep your loved ones memories alive!

please stop by www.madd.org to see new laws in effect and laws we are trying to bring to NY!
